In a sense we are all called to be “dull and over-serious” in the eyes of the world. Naturally, this does not mean we do not laugh or have no joy. Quite the opposite, we are the only ones with the true happiness. However, we cannot continue to take lightly our sin or the sins of others. It is not a joke to laugh at. It is the reason Christ died. Only a fool laughs when he sees someone drunk on TV or otherwise. Only a fool laughs or enjoys immodesty on the screen or otherwise. Only a fool thinks misrepresenting God's character is of little importance. Only a fool cares more about people than he does his Master who bought him. Proverbs 10:23 says, “Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.“
Oh my friends, how it breaks my heart so, to see so many “Christians” making provision for their flesh and justifying sin. Is entertainment bad? No. But, sin is evil and much evil is portrayed in entertainment. Shall we laugh? Is sin a laughing matter? Interestingly, there is no record of Jesus laughing. There is, however, a record of him crying. And why did he mourn? Sin! My friend, Jesus mourned over Jerusalem because of their sin and suffered on the cross for ours. Shall we then laugh at sin? Jesus said, “Happy is the man who mourns,” not happy is the man who laughs. This is what it means in Ecclesiastes 7:3, “Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.”
My brothers, my sisters, start taking sin seriously. Care not if the world thinks you are too serious. For I tell you, from one "over-serious" person to another, there is so much peace, joy, comfort, love, and rest in loving God. If we begin to seriously get to know him and care about the little details of his magnificent character; peace! If we begin to see the seriousness of sin; forgiveness! If we begin to mourn for sin; comfort! I care not if others think I am too serious, for I know I am full of far greater joy and peace because of my “over-seriousness.” The more serious I become the more joy I have deep in my heart, and contrary to popular belief, the more I laugh. Stop laughing at sin and start mourning; then you will find true joy and happiness.
