Ever since I was 14 I have felt God pushing me to read his word daily and pray daily; but did I listen to him? No. Why? No good reason at all. I didn’t want to. I didn’t feel like. I thought going to church and youth group was sufficient. When I got to college I thought going to chapel two days a week, church on Sunday, small groups every Thursday, and fellowship with other believers was enough. All these things are not enough. I knew they were not enough, but they were my excuses for not doing what God told me to do. These things cannot take the place of your daily “morning watch”, as Andrew Murray calls it.
If you have read other posts of mine, you know that I didn’t completely neglect reading the word and prayer. I did read my bible and pray with some frequency. If you put my bible reading and prayer on a chart you would see it go up and down, but it would always be increasing overall. Here’s the thing though, it doesn’t have to be like that. It didn’t have to take me this many years to really begin to have an intimate relationship with our Maker. It only took me disciplining myself, finally. And it only takes you doing the same. So, if you too have struggled with being consistent, don’t wait any longer to be consistent. Be consistent! “Abide now!” Don’t make a million excuses like me not to, but just do it. They say it takes 60 some days to form a new habit. So take 60 days and determine to read and pray each day and see if by the end you have not formed the habit of keeping the morning watch. Please do not be like me and make excuses. Instead go! Do! You will not regret the entering in to an intimate relationship with Jesus, your Bridegroom.
