The rest of that day I was troubled because I enjoy and get much out of those simple songs that he believes are not excellent. What did it say about me that I listened to and enjoyed the music he so dislikes? I felt a little insulted and put down, but perhaps, I am just too simple minded. I spent the rest of the day giving it much thought and came to this conclusion. But first...
I love music that is original and makes you think. From what I understand he and I would like a lot of the same artists. Christian rap is something we both like because they can rap about things that are hard to hear. The song goodbye by Flame is one of those songs. I do not know if he likes Audrey Assad, but her music is such that you must know the bible decently and think about her songs, to know what they are about or in other words think critically.
To be honest, it is through songs by Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin that I really began to learn about Jesus and the stories in the bible. The simpleness of the songs allowed someone like myself, to hear, understand, and learn about God. Theses songs are for the simple minded, like me. They are encouragement for those who don't read their bible and teach what the bible says in a way that is memorable. I learned many bible verses, or parts there of, from these songs.
You may disagree with me and that is ok, but I believe the songs can be considered "making a joyful noise unto the Lord" and it that way they are excellent. When I listen to them, as do many others, it is because it is my prayer or a reminder to myself of how great God really is. Musically they are not the best, I agree; but they are excellent for teaching God's children and encouraging them. And Besides, who created the music of standard that is used to judge them? I would argue us. So, when considering whether a song is excellent or not look to the bible and to God's standard (a humble and contrite spirit) not yours.
