The blog post I read only alluded to the scholars being the answer, but it is this allusion that has concerned me for some time now. Many people, it seems, believe that you must be a bible scholar to interpret scripture. This is why so many people might be tempted to lie about their educational background, because it sounds so much better if you know the original language. But, I disagree.
Tozer says, “ The scholar has a vitally important task. His task is to guarantee the purity of the text, to get as close as possible to the Word as given. He must never sit in judgment upon what is written.” With this I agree. To claim that only someone with special training can interpret scripture is to declare that by human efforts and through human wisdom we can discern the truth. It is to remove God from the picture. We cannot begin to understand scripture unless we have the Holy Spirit within us interpreting it for us. It is His job to interpret the scripture for us. So, we in and of ourselves cannot understand the truth that is found is scripture, but through the Holy Spirit each of us can.
The problem with many blogs is simply, a lack of humility before our Heavenly Father. The truly humble man will not hastily post a blog with their own thoughts, but will first wrestle with God about what they want to write and only post it if they think the Holy Spirit is leading them to. There are many things this humble man wants to say, but he will only say what God would have him to say. The evidence of this is that people are built up and encouraged to seek Christ. His posts will always point back to Christ and never to himself.
So, my friend, whenever you read a blog post test it. Ask God to reveal His truth to you and give you discernment, so you might know when someone is not speaking the truth, whether it be to deceive you on purpose or because they are simply ignorant and speaking with haste. God is alive and he is in control. Let’s not forget about him when we discuss His word.
